Modern American Marquees

Artfully boring. Finding beauty in the mundane and imperfections. Recognizing impactful moments on a human level. This project focuses on the typography of American Marquee signs in the heart of America (a.k.a. Kansas…and some of Missouri).

Marquee signs are some of most basic forms of communication, that seem to have always been around, and even though technology is at an all time high we still see these signs everywhere. They are boring, mundane, overlooked, and mostly ignored unless they are funny. I decided to focus this project on this method of communication. After taking a closer look, I discovered that they are genuine, quirky, and beautiful in an ugly sort-of way. I encourage you to take a closer look at the signs, what they communicate, and their little imperfections that make a graphic designer internally scream.
